First Blog: Social Media during times of PR Crisis.

This is my first ever blog so I’m not sure what approach to take to this. For my first blog I thought I’d ease in gently and tell you guys a little bit about me, why I’ve set this blog up and what I’m going to talk about in it throughout the next couple of weeks. Is that okay with everyone? Great! Let’s get started!

Well firstly my name is Ciara and I’m doing a BA(Honours) in Media and Public Relations and I’m halfway through the second year of this three year course. I’m really enjoying it and I can’t imagine doing any other course J . This kind of gives you a clue to the reason why I’ve set this blog up. We’ve got an assignment in our Information Technologies & New Media module to create and maintain a blog from now until the 12th of March on the theme of online Communications and PR.

So here we both are! I’m going to touch on a lot of topics over the next few weeks but my main aim is to focus on writing about how the PR industry is dealing with PR crises online, over websites and social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook.

I choose this topic because of two recent crises’ I was very aware of. This was the case of Lance Armstrong admitting to doping throughout his cycling career and how he (was advised to) handle it. The other case that got me interested in choosing this as my topic, is a PR crisis closer to home, this is the case of horsemeat being found in beef burgers produced by Irish producers after DNA testing. As the agricultural industry is such large industry in Ireland that generates millions of euro, I wanted to see how such a big crisis for Irish meat was handled and what damage this will do short and long term to the Irish agricultural industry and how the way the crisis was handled will affect these outcomes.

These are just two examples that I plan to look at of how the PR industry is dealing with PR crises online. There are thousands, both big and small, samples of PR crisis out there so I’ll have to do some research on the most interesting ones to tell you all about!
So I hope those of you that have read this far have an interest in what I plan to write about and that you come back and visit on a regular basis to see what I have to say.
Thanks for reading :)
